Our story

Gag Reflex is dedicated to developing the very best comic and variety talents in the industry. Our diverse client list features some of the most talented performers working in the UK today, from traditional stand-ups to acts specializing in improvisation, magic, sketch shows, musical and physical comedy.

As well as managing and shaping the careers of this pool of talent, we also produce live Tours & Festivals (domestic and international), programme Venue and Festival line ups, match comics to corporate events, and provide skilled writers, actors and presenters for a selection of TV, Radio, Commercials and warm up shows.

Founder & Director Lee Martin became obsessed with comedy, after borrowing Denis Leary's "No Cure for Cancer" on audio cassette (like MP3s, but real) whilst at school. His first foray into the industry was as an over-enthusiastic punter at Manchester club XS Malarkey back in 2001. Lee helped them move to a bigger, more suitable space. Fast forward two years and Lee was onstage at the inaugural North West Comedy Awards accepting an award for that very same club. The club went on to win Chortle's Best Venue Award, a record breaking 10 times.

Off the back of his achievements with XS, Lee joined Manchester's original comedy club The Frog and Bucket, and helped that venue garner multiple awards, and greater commercial and artistic success.  Whilst running the Frog, Lee formed Gag Reflex, and in 2010 moved on to focus solely on management and production.

He has produced shows all over the world, including seasons at the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, New Zealand International Comedy Festival and Just For Laughs in Montreal, to name a few. Next year Lee will be back in Scotland for his 18th Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Previous seasons include back to back sell outs in some of the Fringe's largest venues, including the Pleasance Grand, and the EICC.

Lee is proud to have evolved the reach of Gag Reflex from the NW circuit to global festivals, television, radio & beyond.  He believes in an artist first approach to management, a philosophy which permeates the whole agency.  Gag Reflex acts have variously appeared on BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, ITV, Sky1 and BBC Radio 4 since the agency started, and as far as Lee's concerned, the sky’s the limit.

Career highlights include West End seasons & a Garrick theatre run for Tape Face, a UK tour with The Axis of Awesome, and being dressing as a gorilla on BBC3's Tape Face Tapes.

Lee has read Steve Job's official biography 12 times, and has a lightsaber on his desk. Cos he's cool.

Hannah Godfrey sneaked into The Stand in Edinburgh on a trip to Scotland one school half term, and the comedy bug was truly caught. Coupled with an inherited and growing passion for comedy, that show led to a career fully immersed in the British comedy industry.

Hannah has run large-scale comedy clubs since she was 21, and feels fortunate to have witnessed many of today’s comedy Arena and mainstream TV stars cut their teeth in a live environment. She has led training academies to bring show managers to brand standard, and worked in Corporate Entertainment, booking performers for large & small scale events across the UK, and internationally.

At boutique comedy agency Beyond Compere, she gained invaluable experience in live bookings and management, and later a spell in the Music Industry with worldwide giants United Talent Agency (formerly The Agency Group), exposed her to travelling and touring with some of the biggest names in music today, including Dolly Parton, Motorhead, Ringo Starr, Boy George and Deep Purple.

Hannah joined Gag Reflex in 2014, relishing the opportunity to return to Comedy, and the fantastic clients the agency represents, taking on the role of Agent and Producer. Hannah emigrated to New Zealand in Sept 2020, moving to a part time role in the company.

After 7 years writing and editing for Teletext and Ceefax (for all the teenagers out there: the 80s/90s version of the Internet) Producer Dean Feasby spent 10 years in theatre, marketing shows at Alsager Arts Centre, Crewe Lyceum, York Grand Opera House, Manchester Palace, Manchester Opera House, and Manchester O2 Ritz, as well as a stint heading-up marketing for Legoland Discovery Centre and Sea Life Manchester.

Dean first visited the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011 for his 30th birthday and has been hooked ever since, which led to him taking up the role of Marketing Manager at Edinburgh Playhouse for two years.

Career highlights include leading on campaigns for £1million+ grossing pantos, launching The Lion King, Ghost The Musical and Wicked in Manchester, leading on a co-promotion between DisneyPixar and Sea Life for the release of Finding Dory, stage managing bands at the Ritz, and sitting between Boycie and Jonathan Creek in the BBC Green Room.

Conor Marum joins us as a Producer, having had a long history with the company. His first visit to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2011, which was largely by accident as a fresh-faced 18-year-old, ignited a love for comedy and variety that has never been extinguished.

Conor loves August for the opportunity of seeing the best performers in the world, in the magical city of Edinburgh and knew his summers would never be the same again. He has worked with Gag Reflex every year at the Fringe from 2011, starting out flyering, to managing the large street team, and later becoming a Production Assistant. He can be seen as a very young innocent teenager on Not out of Norway Yet, a Documentary following Tape Face at 2012’s Edinburgh Festival.

He is sharp, funny, committed and reliable, and a brilliant addition to the team

Conor has had the pleasure of working for two of the best comedy clubs in the country, the Birmingham Glee and the Frog & Bucket, Manchester. These afforded him invaluable experience of the comedy circuit and (more importantly) allowed him to watch comedy for free year-round.

After a brief foray working in IT support he can confirm that compères up and down the country are entirely correct about the people who work in IT. It cemented his resolve to escape and work in the comedy industry full time, and he is delighted to have joined Gag Reflex full time.

Hailing from the west country of England, Ollie Downton discovered his passion for comedy at the tender age of 12, performing for various events as Revilo the Clown. Stilt walking and unicycling proved to be gateway activities, which led him to explore various other genres of live performance. Ollie went on to study Lighting Design at Rose Bruford College in London and it was there he honed his skills in production management and technical direction. He is a sucker for problem solving and technical troubleshooting.

Ollie’s experience spans various live performance genres including, musical theatre, dance, children’s theatre, corporate events and comedy. Career highlights include overseeing the technical direction of Tape Face’s West End run, national and international tours as well as the creation of his Las Vegas venue, The House of Tape. He has also co-ordinated and overseeing international theatre and comedy tours to Beijing, Malaysia, Singapore, the Middle East, Canada and the United States.

He has worked at the Edinburgh Festival in various technical capacities for eight years, and Eddie Izzard once pencilled his eyebrows in at a party.

Beth Mullins joined Gag Reflex towards the end of 2019, taking on the role of Live Booker. She is dedicated to generating live work for our performers, and is a very welcome addition to the team whilst the company continues to grow.

Beth's passion for Theatre and Performance can be dated back to her primary school years, winning a ‘Commitment to the Arts' award at just 10 years old. She later studied Theatre and Performance at the University of Leeds. It was at University she first heard of the Edinburgh Festival, and wanting to see what all the fuss was about, she took on a role as a volunteer at Pleasance. It’s safe to say she enjoyed the experience, as she arranged the following four years of her life around the Fringe, to make sure she was available to work. It was here she had the opportunity to witness a wide variety of comedic acts, and has been passionate about the industry ever since.

Beth loves people-focused roles. Having worked as Entertainment Coordinator in Finnish Lapland, her primary focus was looking after the Santa’s and the Elves - the unofficial Mrs Claus. She then volunteered internationally as a Teacher, before settling back in the UK to work as an Events and Community Coordinator which involved maintaining excellent relationships with clients and sponsors alike.

In October 2020, DLT Entertainment, the award-winning production and distribution company, announced it had made investment in Gag Reflex.

President of DLT Entertainment Donald Taffner Jr, joined the company board alongside Gag Reflex’s Founder and Director Lee Martin, and they launched a new regional production company called Gag Reflex Productions.

The new company is located in at the Gag Reflex offices in Manchester, and develops daytime, children’s, game and panel shows, to be produced outside of London, run by Lee Martin and with creative assistance from DLT’s Creative Director, Darren Smith and Head of Entertainment, Phil Tredinnick.

“We have worked with Gag Reflex on a number of projects at the Edinburgh Festival and at other venues around the country.  I have always found them professional, efficient and very easy to work with. I would have no hesitation in recommending them as a company to work with.”

Andy Townsend, The Galton Agency

“Gag Reflex have programmed the Comedy Club at King George’s Hall in Blackburn for six years. It is a pleasure to work in partnership with them; the line-ups are always provided far enough in advance to give assurance that we are effectively programmed and the quality of acts is never in doubt.  They are always at the end of the phone and actively want to discuss acts performances before and after a show. They listen to our recommendations and trust our opinions as much as their own. They are not just a booking agency for our club; they are an extension of our venue’s staff team and we are proud to be one of their venues.”

Toni-Leanne Comer, Assistant Promotions Manager, King George's Hall, Blackburn

“We have used Gag Reflex to book our line ups for many years now, and find them to be very reliable and professional. The comics they provide are of the highest calibre and have been equally reliable. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Gag Reflex for all your Comedy needs”
Jessica Toomey, Managing Director - The Frog & Bucket, Manchester

“We wait with baited breath every week to see who the XS Malarkey crew are going to bring us next! And they never disappoint – a great line up every week. We love having the night here at The Pub/Zoo, and actually look forward to work on a Tuesday!”

Helen Power, Newsco Insider

"Absolutely fantastic performance from Dan Nightingale on the night; he really got everyone laughing from the first second and fit the bill superbly. Top man and a pleasure to work with too. If there’s any other opportunities for us to use a comedian we’ll certainly consider Gag Reflex and Dan Nightingale first of all. Thanks for helping to make our Christmas Awards memorable."
